Popular Types of Massage Therapy

Think all massages are the same? Think again! Many do not realize all of the modalities of massage available, let alone all of the uses of this therapy.

Massages are generally given for either relaxation or therapy, sometimes a little of both. Therefore, the type of therapy "prescribed" depends on why someone is getting a massage. Let's look at a few massage techniques and their benefits.

Swedish Massage - this is the traditional form of massage most people associate with the field, and most commonly used in relaxation sessions. Swedish massages are gentler than other forms. The therapist uses firm, long stokes, kneading motions or friction across the body in order to increase circulation and release tension in muscles. In Swedish massage, it is also commonplace to use oils or lotions to allow the hands to move better across the body.

Shiatsu Massage - ever see someone massage someone with their elbow? That's something one may experience if getting a shiatsu massage, also sometimes referred to as acupressure massage. This is a more healing method of massage, and differs from Swedish in that the therapist uses more pressure and stretching motions. The therapist will also use other parts of the body such as elbows or the knuckles to work on pressure points, mimicking the needle motions of acupuncture.

Trigger Point Massage - this one goes along with the goal of acupressure, only it specifically deals with trigger points, or very sensitive spots on muscles. In this method, the therapist works on these trigger points and surrounding areas with finger pressure to reduce or even deactivate the pain.

Deep Tissue - people suffering from chronic pain may want to consider a deep tissue massage. This method is somewhat similar to Swedish in the type of strokes, but with more pressure so that a deeper layer of the muscle can be reached. This type of massage may not be as relaxing, but it is aimed more at healing.

Reflexology - if anyone told you that rubbing a certain spot on your hand or foot could help rid headache pain, they weren't crazy. This massage technique works on certain reflexes of the hand and foot that correspond to other areas of the body, and therefore affects their muscular functions without working on them directly.

These techniques are not the only types of massage therapy available. Talk with your therapist about which is right for you and your situation.
